Got a Tip?

Rupert Wyatt To Direct AMC Pilot For George Washington Spy Drama ‘Turn’

nullWith “Breaking Bad” ending its run this year, AMC has started thinking about its future. The cable network is looking to the past for inspiration, nabbing a high-profile director to set the tone for period drama “Turn.”

Since bailing on directing the sequel to the sci-fi blockbuster “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” last fall, Rupert Wyatt has been quiet. While he’s been attached to a couple of projects, it seems he’s decided to head to the small screen to helm the “Turn” pilot for the cable network in the meantime.

The drama series, based on Alexander Rose’s “Washington’s Spies,” will take place in the summer of 1778 and focus on “New York farmer Abe Woodhull, who bands together with a group of childhood friends to form The Culper Ring, an unlikely group of spies who turn the tide in America’s fight for independence.” Though the premise does sound like a good jumping-off point for a potentially interesting and thrilling show, we have to wonder how AMC’s infamous cost-cutting practices will affect the period drama. There isn’t a timetable in place on when the show will arrive but we’re guessing we won’t see anything until 2014 at the earliest, when there’ll be a Heisenberg-sized hole in the cable network’s schedule.
