So, how chuffed is Focus Features feeling about Laika‘s upcoming stop-motion animated “The Boxtrolls“? They’ve been teasing this thing since last July, even though the movie isn’t coming out until this fall, and even despite there being a lack of official stills yet, another trailer has dropped to stoke the flames of curiosity.
Here’s what you need to know: this one is from the folks behind “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” it’s co-directed by Graham Annable (the story artist on both those movies) along with Anthony Stacchi (“Open Season”), and the A-list talent — Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan and Ben Kingsley — can’t be beat. As for the story, it’s based on the best-selling illustrated novel “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow, and is set in the Victorian-era town of Cheesebridge, where fearsome trolls live beneath the city streets, emerging at night to steal the city’s children and cheese.
So, good folks involved, an inventive story in what looks like a labour love with a studio who is already very passionate about it. So yeah, we’ll be eager to see for ourselves what Laika has got cooking. “The Boxtrolls” arrives on September 26th.
