Update: This one is now arriving via Image Entertainment.
While there was a brief moment earlier in the year when Peter Weir‘s “The Way Back” was being eyed as a potential late season awards season horse, that heat has pretty much disappeared thanks to respectful, if not enthusiastic, reviews and a fairly non-existent campaign (btw, why is the film still not on the Newmarket Films website?). That said, a new Peter Weir film is something to sit up and take notice of and we’re eager to see what the director has in store in this latest widescreen epic.
Starring Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Mark Strong and Saoirse Ronan, the epic follows a group of seven prisoners who escape a Siberian labor camp in 1940 and attempt to trek thousands of miles across hostile terrain to India and their freedom. This new clip from the film does a good job of showcasing the hardships the prisoners will face on their journey and what they will need to do in order to prevent getting caught. Also, this is the second look at a movie today with a character boasting an assorted array of body tattoos (the first being Tom Hardy in “Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy“). New trend alert?
The film opens in Los Angeles on December 29th and then will go wide on 500 screens on January 21st. But you’ll be forgiven if you forgot because there seems to be no advertising around this one at all. [HeyUGuys]

@Ian Thanks for the heads up.

The film is being released by Image Entertainment now apparently. It is on the Image Entertainment website under the forthcoming theatrical tab. They also already have a dvd/blu solicited for the spring.
I think Newmarket films has quietly went belly-up. The President of Newmarket left the company this past fall and formed a new outfit called Wreckin Hill Entertainment. Never a good sign.
