Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund as Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady with Kristen Stewart as the latter’s bride, Marylou? Yeah, we had our doubts when the cast was first revealed for Walter Salles‘ adaptation of “On the Road,” but these newly release pics from the film (via Comme au Cinema) definitely have an authentic vibe that we’re liking.
Adapted for the screen by Salles’ “Motorcycle Diaries” scribe José Rivera, the iconic Beat Generation work follows the story of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty (surrogates for Kerouac and Neal Cassady), as they journey across the North American landscape in pursuit of self-knowledge and experience. Salles has surrounded his leads with a remarkable supporting cast including Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss, Terrence Howard, Alice Braga and Danny Morgan so we’re definitely curious to see what this ensemble has cooked up together.
Salles has previously stated that “any version of “On the Road” done correctly would need to be shot in black and white” and early stills were in the monochromatic format. But with these stills both in formats, we’re guessing it will be a mix of both. We’ll just have to wait and see. But at any rate, the film should look gorgeous in color or not, as his “Motorcycle Diaries” team of DoP Eric Gautier, production designer Carlos Conti and composer Gustavo Santaolalla are all back for the film.
No word of when we’ll get to see the picture, but Cannes is just around the corner. No North American release dates have yet been set, but according to Comme Au Cinema, “On the Road” will hit theaters in France on December 7th.
hope the film will be awesome as the book ….. I've wrote a song called "sal paradise" … playing with my band :" the approach"…. check it out at our homepage : http://www.theapproach.at on the new album "rebellious riot "
Amazing source material+talented director+sour actress with the odd good performance+bland actor+fantastic newbie actor = neutral expectations.
she looks bright
Won\’t be ready to Cannes. Salles told \”Folha de São Paulo\”, a brazilian newspaper, that he started the editing process on january and will be ready at the end of the year but more likely in 2012.
I would have denounced Mr. Hedlund too as a pretty boy cipher (perhaps it was due to the Tron\’s script), but he saved himself in Country Strong (what a great voie!), so it was just a case of him taking the George Lucas\’s acting drug in the former film. I\’m looking forward to him taking meatier roles. As for Stewart, it\’s time for her to do a genuine romantic comedy.
Not going to be in black in white rodie.
This is what movie stills should look like. I was reeling after seeing the new Captain America pictures. This isn\’t just a movie it\’s a cinematic event. They better do it justice.
Gotta say, I agree with GEDN. The principal cast scares the crap out of me. Hopefully Salles can coach good performances out of them. 1-2 being complete charisma vacuums.
It\’s in color. This looks good. I was worried but it looks good. The cast is fine with me.
Are people still saying this is going to be in B&W? Looks like color to me…Maybe certain sequences will be B&W, but I always doubted the whole film would be…
These look stunning! Plus I\’m a huge fan of that K-Stew girl. Can\’t wait.
The two most uncharismatic actors of the last year.
