Well, here’s a bit of an interesting twist. Following the signing on of Henry Cavill in the role of Clark Kent in Zack Snyder‘s “Superman,” speculation quickly turned to who will play Lois Lane. But word emerges tonight that the hunt is on for a female lead for a character that is not Lois Lane.
Variety reports that Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike have emerged as contenders for the role that is not yet being disclosed. If we were to wager a guess — considering that all three thesps are blondes — we’d say the part will be that of Cat Grant. A gossip columnist at The Daily Planet, she was a love interest for Clark Kent with a triangle of sorts emerging between Clark, Lois and Cat. But again, this is just a guess — it could be another character altogether.
As for Lois Lane, the trade reports that Warner Bros. doesn’t want a big name that will overshadow Cavill so no surprise then that the early rumors of Kristen Stewart turned out to be false. In fact, most of the names bandied about early on — Rachel McAdams, Jessica Biel, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis — don’t seem likely at this point. Perhaps someone smaller like a Lake Bell? That would be fine with us.
Eve and Pike are no strangers to the tentpole test process as both were named during casting sessions for “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “X-Men: First Class,” respectively. Kruger is a bit of a new face to franchise fare, but obviously an accomplished thesp and best known for her role in Quentin Tarantino‘s “Inglourious Basterds.” WB and Snyder are also on the hunt for an unnamed villain, though no names have cropped up (yet).
Production will start this summer, with a December 2012 release planned.

Let this movie be all about story and action instead of teenage drama and angst.
How will a big name actress overshadow Cavill? He\’s playing superman for crying out loud! People are gonna go see superman, who is superman…Cavill! Yea Lois is important but superman is much more. So there is no reason he should be overshadowed.
It\’s going to be a remake of SMALLVILLE. Only to make that not-obvious, Lori Lemaris will be used in place of Lana. She was the college sweetheart. But, the same angsty dynamic will be replayed from from the Lana-Clark relationship in SMALLVILLE. Only the girlfriend\’s name will change.
That Twilight-loving teen girl demographic loved, seriously LOVED, the Lana-Clark teen romance, even though it drove everyone else mad. There is even speculation that this relationship was one of the inspirations for Meyer in her Twilight series. Those teen girls flooded DC offices with letters petitioning that the marriage between Lois and Clark be undone, so Clark could be with his one, true love… Lana Lang. The petitioning was so heavy, that DC actually considered it before Spider-Man pulled the same thing and set off a firestorm. If DC is taking a greater hand in the movie, and relayed that teen girl reaction to Lana-Clark, then I won\’t be surprised if the film showcases Lana (or a thinly veiled Lana clone).
