Got a Tip?

Brillante Mendoza’s ‘Captured’ Starring Isabelle Huppert Headed To Cannes?

It’s that time of year again when every man and his dog is speculating about what will and what won’t show up at the Croisette.

The latest film in question is Brillante Mendoza‘s “Captured” starring Isabelle Huppert which is set to see the Filipino helmer return to his old stomping ground of Cannes where he won the Best Director gong only two years ago with his drama “Kinatay.” Even though shooting only wrapped weeks ago, Mendoza — a prolific director, to say the least, having made 9 films since his debut in 2005 with “The Masseur” — reportedly already has a first cut completed which leaves him plenty of time to polish it up for the May festival.

“Captured” co-stars Katherine Mulville, Marc Zanetta, Maria Isabel Lopez and Rustica Carpio and follows the true story of Thérèse Bourgoin (Huppert), a French woman who worked for a humanitarian organization on Palawan Island in the Philippines only to be kidnapped by mistake along with a colleague, while transporting equipment to Puerto Princesa, by the Muslim extremist group Abu Sayyaf, who are fighting for Mindanao independence.

Mendoza teamed with Boots Agbayani Pastor and Patrick Bancarel for the script with the French, German, Filipino and British co-production led by Didier Costet of Swift Productions. We’re keen to see what the helmer has installed next after the mixed bag that is his previous films. We were fans of “Serbis,” walked out of “Kinatay” despite all its acclaim and was fairly impressed by his last effort, “Lola.” [Cineuropa]
