Damon Lindelof Penning Super-Secret Sci-Fi Thriller For Disney

‘Lost’ Scribe Reportedly Receiving Seven-Figure Deal

Damon Lindelof has become quite the Hollywood favorite after writing and exec producing “Lost” through to its controversial finish last year. He helped write the upcoming “Cowboys and Aliens” for Jon Favreau and gave a much-needed boost to Ridley Scott‘s “Alien” prequel, so much so that Scott deemed the story worthy of a completely new figuration called “Prometheus.”

He’s working right now with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci — his “Cowboys and Aliens” co-writers — to push through a “Star Trek” sequel for J.J. Abrams. With all these big things going on around him, Deadline report today that the highly in-demand writer is breaking off on his own to write a science fiction film for Disney.

Intriguingly, the premise for the movie is being kept completely under wraps. Disney will only say that the working title is “1952” (the year? a set of numbers? a # you can text to get a secret code?) and that Lindelof received a seven-figure deal to get the script going. Mike Fleming also reported that he heard the project will include a release in multiple platforms, not just film, whatever that can mean in today’s technological era.

Conspiracy theorists would like to think this is something like re-writing the current “Black Hole” project at Disney that “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski may tackle one day, but our guess is it’s something completely new and unique.

This move is huge for Lindelof as it will be his first project that he’s writing and producing from the ground up. Though “Lost” definitely had its ups and downs, Lindelof is one of the best writers working in the science fiction genre today. With Disney backing him, the project is sure to be huge. We’re hoping it’s not another “Alice in Wonderland” monstrosity aimed towards the kiddies, but a grown-up piece of sci-fi like the upcoming “Super 8.”
