Fashion designer turned film director Tom Ford impressed us two years ago with his adaptation of Christopher Isherwood‘s "A Single Man" and soon excited us with the news that he was already writing a "very different" project "from scratch" that he surprisingly revealed was a comedy. Fans waiting for this sophomore effort like us, however, probably shouldn’t hold their breath as Ford now reveals the project might still be quite some time away.
"I would lose my mind if I just did films," Ford tells the Telegraph. "My next film is ready to go. But even if I cast it now, it would be another 18 months before we were on set. I enjoy the speed of fashion. I love doing different things and I think I still have something valid to say in fashion."
Could the stress of making his first film be acting as something of a deterrent? Ford has previously mentioned the struggles on his debut citing, for example, the logistical nightmare in flying over his design team and their materials. And let’s not forget the first day no-show of a major actor on board. But, if "A Single Man" taught us anything — not that we didn’t expect as much from the former creative director of Gucci and YSL — Ford takes production design very seriously with the writer-director adding that he’ll likely set future films in London, his city of residence. Ford seems to want to be sure he can make the film on his own terms without compromise so we’d reckon that’s likely his hesitation in jumping into the pool feet first.
However long it’ll take to get going, we’ll definitely keep a keen eye on Ford’s cinematic developments particularly with what we’ve already predicted will be "the most gorgeously photographed comedy ever."
I LOVE Tom Ford and A Single Man was a truly perfect film!! I also LOVE Colin Firth so it was a given for me!!!
A long time to wait for Tom Ford\’s next film. Virgo people spend so much time and energy on details and perfection. Hope this next film is as beautiful as A Single Man.
A Single Man is still my favorite film of 2009 and one of the favorite films period. Can\’t wait to hear more about Mr. Ford\’s new project.
