Got a Tip?

First Official Look At Sean Hayes, Will Sasso & Chris Diamantopoulos As ‘The Three Stooges’

Are you ready to see a movie starring that guy from “Will & Grace” and two people you never heard of? Would it help if we told you it’s based on slapstick comedy show your Dad grew up watching? While we’ll ways been dreaming of what could’ve been with the Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro incarnation, we’re gonna have to live with Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos as our “The Three Stooges.” The dream project by the Farrelly Brothers has been in the works for a long time now, and expectations will be riding high, but we dunno, somehow even looking at this first picture of the trio from USA Today we’re already bored.

That said, the ambition certainly isn’t lacking. The new film will be made up of three shorts telling one single story that will deliver the old school nyuks nyuks of the classic black and white laffers, while placing the trio in a modern context. And while the lead thesps — Hayes aside we suppose — are largely unknown, the supporting cast features Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch, Larry David and Jennifer Hudson. So that’s something. But our worry is that Farrellys will be too far into their own comfort zone with the “The Three Stooges.” The directors humor has never exactly been subtle and with Larry, Curly and Moe getting the most laughs out of hitting each other with inanimate objects, we fear where Farrellys indulgence in bottom of the barrel humor will take them. Not to mention the old school trio were geniuses at this type this thing — these guys? We’re not so sure.

Anyway, we’ll find out next spring on April 4, 2012. More below.

  1. Some pretty idiodic comments in the main article. Bored? By a publicity still? From a film you haven\’t even seen yet? Give me a break!!!!

Sure, it\’s gonna be a tough one to pull off.
REALLY tough. But (and as a fan of the original trio I can\’t even believe I\’m saying this) _not impossible_ to pull off.

As to the celebrity status of the actors in question, what the HELL does it matter if the leads are unknown or semi-known actors????? If they have the comedy chops and the timing, it could actually work. Granted, that aspect remains to be seen. BUT— if they rise to the occasion it should be noted that various drafts of the script have been seen by a few journalists, who have reported that judging by what they saw on the page, the \”attitude\” and \”tone\” of the piece is pretty true to the original shorts.

I\’ll grant that it may be a longshot…but perhaps not quite the longshot that the naysayers and fan-nerds predict.
I\’m one fan-nerd knucklehead who\’s keeping an open mind about this one.

  2. I\’m not a fan of MadTV either, but it was a popular show for a long time and he was one of the main stars for years.

He was also one of the regulars on that Shatner sitcom last year.

Again, that\’s not a show I liked in any way, but when someone is a star of multiple, heavily hyped network TV series (one of which was quite successful), I just don\’t think you can say unknown. Especially when the example of someone \”known\” is \”the supporting star from Will & Grace.\”

  3. I don\’t think it\’s a stretch at all. While I know his name and face is certainly familiar, I couldn\’t name a movie of his from the top of my head. He is not a well known character actor.

  4. I think it\’s a stretch to call Sasso, a guy who\’s been working steadily since the 90s, an unknown but I agree with everything else here. I\’d love to feel excited for this. Just can\’t.
