If you haven't heard about "The Island President" yet, you soon will. The documentary from filmmaker Jon Shenk ("Lost Boys Of Sudan") premiered at Telluride last year and from there headed to Toronto where it picked up a People's Choice Award for Best Documentary. Since then, the film has played a handful of festivals on the way to its release next month, but it has been picking up additional attention thanks to recent events that are making "This Island President" more relevant than ever.
The documentary is a chronicle of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, the pro-democracy leader who helped oust the brutal regime of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. But that just be the beginning of his story, as he soon became faced with the reality that the islands themselves are in grave danger due to rising ocean levels that could render them uninhabitable unless something is done. And thus begins another journey, with Nasheed working with other countries to try and bring down carbon emissions to stop the rising waters. But earlier this month, the story took another twist when Nasheed was removed from power in a violent coup, with his supporters tear gassed and beaten.
Radiohead have lent the movie a wealth of tunes to support the cause, and get the word out about the film. Below, we have an exclusive clip from the movie with Mohamed Nasheed describing some of the struggles he faced in trying to enact change. "The Island President" begins rolling out on March 28th opening in New York City with San Francisco following on March 30th and Los Angeles on April 6th. The US is actually I believe a representative mother of democracy. Today  United  states of America democratic government misunderstand Original Maldivian internal crisis ,  Barack Obama government fail to protect First  democratically elected President of Maldives. Brutal regime, coup president Mohamed Waheed Hassan  Manik PHD puppet dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom control ,  we boost 100 years beck after the coup by military and police ,  defiantly this is coup ,For Nasheed, the journey didn't end , He bring Gayoom to justice for all the human rights violations under his watch.
This man is a bona fide hero. I hope this documentary brings some attention to his cause.
