Ever since his run as the governor of California ended, people have speculated about the future of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career. There were rumors of a return to the “Terminator” franchise as well as the long-gestating World War II film “With Wings As Eagles.” But while he’s set to return later this month in the sequel “The Expendables 2,” we’re more excited by his role in the new film from “I Saw The Devil” and “The Good The Bad The Weird” director Kim Jee-woon, “The Last Stand.” And now, courtesy of USA Today, we have our first look at Arnie in the film, along with another photo with co-star Forest Whitaker via Movieweb.

Despite looking noticeably older, he can still pull off a cold, gruff, intimidating look, and while it may just be the costume, we can’t help but be reminded of fellow '80s icon Sylvester Stallone in James Mangold’s underrated “Cop Land.” And like that film, “The Last Stand” similarly follows small-town law enforcement caught in a mess bigger than they can handle as Schwarzenegger plays a disgraced L.A.P.D. cop in a small town who is trying to stop a fresh-out-of-prison drug cartel leader from crossing the border with $400 million.

Friday Night Lights” star Zach Gilford and Rodrigo Santoro (“300”) play fellow small-town cops who work alongside Arnie to catch Eduardo Noriega’s drug cartel leader and his underling Peter Stormare. Legendary character actor Harry Dean Stanton, Jaimie Alexander, Luis Guzmán, Genesis Rodriguez, Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker round out the cast. The film is set for release on January 18, 2013.
