While its Cannes premiere more or less defined John Hillcoat's Prohibition-era bootlegging drama "Lawless" as bonafide genre material and nothing more (doesn't bother us, really), it take a better man than this writer to not be excited by the return of the Aussie filmmaker with a phenomenal cast which includes Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman and Mia Wasikowska, among others.
With its August 29th unveiling literally around the corner, a whole heaps of new photos from the pic have popped up providing new looks at the Bondurant brothers, two of their love interests and a few of the hurdles that stand in their way, including Pearce's government enforcer from Chicago and Oldman's wise gangster. The story, set during the fading years of prohibition, follows the Bondurants, a trio of bootlegging brothers who struggle to hang on to their lucrative moonshine business with a sadistic special agent on their tail.
Our Cannes review excitingly noted that "as far as top-tier storytelling goes, it doesn't get much better than this" despite the fact it "doesn't quite achieve the lyricism or thematic depth that Hillcoat previously attained." Check out the pics below… [KinoGallery]
I am so looking forward to this: traditional storytelling by a phenomenal cast! How refreshing to have something that is not a remake/reboot/sequel/prequel and no superheroes. Paid enough of my respects to those – and enjoyed them thoroughly – this summer.
