Producers Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger have built up a helluva CV over the years, with their names gracing films like "Little Miss Sunshine," "Cold Mountain," "King of the Hill," "Chuck & Buck" and Alexander Payne's upcoming "Nebraska." With their latest effort, "Ruby Sparks," now in theaters, Thompson On Hollywood recently caught up with the pair, and they provided an update on a handful of projects they have in the works, including one which has gained a helmer coming off a summer blockbuster.
The duo revealed that director Marc Webb is now attached to helm "The Only Living Boy in New York." Last we heard, the project had Seth Gordon and Logan Lerman on board with the latter coincidentally a contender for the lead at one point for Webb's own recent film about a boy (and superhero) in New York, "The Amazing Spider-Man." A project in gestation for nearly seven years, the story follows a recent college graduate adrift in New York City whose life is upended by his father's mistress. When we talked to former director Gordon last summer, he said financing still needed to come together — and that may still be the case now (no word if Logan Lerman is still linked) — but you can add it to the list of potential gigs Webb has next.
Of course, Webb is still a contender to direct "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (though it seems there are a lot of contract stuff and other issues to work out) and he's got a handful of other possibilities — "Age of Rage," "Just Another Love Story," "Jesus Christ Superstar" — looming in the background, but this seems like it would be a return to the kind of smaller scale, youthful story he made his name on. So we'll see how this develops, but it's certainly one that fits into his wheelhouse quite nicely.
this script made it to the top ten of the Blacklist in the mid-2000s and even with no talent attached Sony/Columbia acquired it initially for Tobey Maguire who was then their Peter Parker darling. Script Shadow gave it a positive review and having read the first few pages, the dialogue is great. Certainly something that Webb and Lerman could turn into a good film
