Sorry about the headline, it was just too easy. But that being said, the first trailer for David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” certainly impresses and promises to be a get-out-of-your-seat-and-cheer crowd pleaser.
Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams star in the true story of boxer ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his half-brother Dickie Ecklund (Bale). The film pretty much feels like a cross between “Boogie Nights” and “Rocky”; a kid trying to prove himself in an activity that will force him to make some painful sacrifices. It looks great, if a little pedestrian for the usually singular David O. Russell, but we’re excited nonetheless.
“The Fighter” will open in limited release on December 10th before going wide on December 17th. [FirstShowing or watch the trailer in HD at Apple]
Sh*t trailer! Looks like Rocky crossed with Rudy!
queue the inspirational score
"This film pretty much feels like a cross between 'Boogie Nights' and 'Rocky'". Except it doesn't. There's absolutely no link to the feel of Boogie Nights. This is what rankles me about the typical "movie A crossed with movie B" descriptions – you're only associating it with Boogie Nights because on an abstract level, Mark Wahlberg is acting in a more serious movie. That's it. The Rudy line above is stupid – Rudy is a Rocky carbon copy, so why not say it's Rocky crossed with Rocky? – but it still makes more sense than comparing this to Boogie Nights.
Yes, that was quite a cheesy trailer…what was with the music and title cards? For some reason I thought this was going to be more low key, maybe like The Wrestler.
Still, I will say Bale looks to be a highlight…maybe he'll get his first Oscar nom with this. Seems like an actor more likely to get a Supporting Actor award than a leading one anyway.
Your site is amazing.I am very impressed to see this,i want to come back for visiting your site.Keep doing Good as well as you can..
This feels strangely.. Wisseau.
What up with that?
the trailer looks a few conventional(above all because of the too obvious music) for a R rated dramedy but works well for me
Wahlberg looks well casted and the other actors interesting
A shockingly conventional trailer, enlivened only by Bale's high-wire shtick (I still contend that Donnie Wahlberg is a better actor than Mark). But the trailer loses huge points for not giving fellow Academy Award nominee (and fourth-billed) Melissa Leo a mention in the cast roll-call.
I wish they would just do teaser trailers. This trailer is basically the entire movie in 4 minutes.
If a movie is produced, distributed or marketed by any Hollywood entity it is going to have a "conventional" trailer. They have trailer factories. These factories shit trailers is the most formulaic way possible. So yes this trailer has the same feel as Rocky 1-whatever, The Boxer, That one with Russel Crowe, Seabiscuit, Rudy, Any Given Football Movie, etc.
What should be factored in is A: David O' Russell
B: Ridiculously stellar cast C:The way Russell has handled the fight footage in the age of Pay-per-view boxing. Which appears to me to be different than anything I've ever seen in a boxing movie.
Cross between Boogie Nights and Rocky?? I really like you guys at the Playlist but seriously. Sloppy crossed with obvious.
his looks like some pretty interesting, tough footage polluted by awful editing and music.
I will give props to the fight footage, but I heard Wahlberg got the actual crew who films the pro boxing matches on HBO due to his Entourage ties….so basically the fights should look just like the real deal.
