Watch: Joss Whedon Goes Shakespeare With Trailer For ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

nullYes, Joss Whedon — who made $1 billion and change for Marvel simply by making some spandex heroes fly around for a couple of hours — has made a movie based on a Shakespeare play. In black and white. In his backyard. And on a budget that would barely feed the cast and crew of “The Avengers” for a single day. But you know what else? It actually looks pretty good.

The first trailer for “Much Ado About Nothing” has arrived, and it’s eager to shake off any associations with the Bard being boring, by fizzing things up with quick cutting and scoring the promo with St. Germain‘s jazzy “Rose Rouge.” And it presents ‘Much Ado’ — starring friends and frequent collaborators Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Fran Kranz, Jillian Morgese, Sean Maher, Clark Gregg and Reed Diamond — as a hip, contemporary relationship movie, albeit it one with soliloquies. But you know what? It works. “Its off-the-cuff nature makes for a film that is not flawless…but is, from beginning to end, delightful,” we wrote in our review from TIFF.

See for yourself below. The film opens on June 7th in limited release.

  1. Hmmm. Still not sure what to think of this. I guess I'll have to check it out eventually and the reviews have been very favorable. I'm a big Shakespeare fan and a pretty big Whedon fan. I loved Denisof and Acker on "Angel". So it sounds like a match made in heaven. But I'm just not feeling it. 🙂
