8 Shows To Watch In August: ‘Lovecraft Country,’ ‘The Fugitive’ & More

We Hunt Together
What You Need to Know: The latest in the long line of detective series, “We Hunt Together” is a limited series that centers on two detectives as they track down a pair of deadly killers. Starring Babou Ceesay (“Into the Badlands”), Eve Myles (“Torchwood”), Hermione Corfield (“Rust Creek”), and Dipo Ola (“Baghdad Central”), the six-episode limited series will play with the cat and mouse narrative as the two sets of characters learn hard lessons about getting too caught up in the lives of others. Written by Gaby Hull and directed by Carl Tibbetts, the series looks to explore further the minds behind killers and those who track them down, in a limited format that will hopefully allow the series to go beyond the typical episodic nature of detective series.

Ted Lasso
What You Need To Know: Jason Sudeikis returns to television with his new Apple TV+ sports comedy series “Ted Lasso.” Sudeikis created the series with Bill Lawrence, who has helmed quite a few classic television comedies including “The Nanny,” “Scrubs,” and the Michael J. Fox series “Spin City.” Per the synopsis, the series follows Lasso, a small-time football coach from Kansas, hired to coach a soccer team in England despite having zero experience. Sudeikis created the character of Ted Lasso way back in 2013 for a series of promos for NBC Sports that were very successful, and the series is expected to follow the same formula. This show marks Sudeikis’ first major television role since his departure from “Saturday Night Live” in 2013 and after a slew of successful films including “Horrible Bosses” and “We’re The Millers” alongside Jennifer Aniston, so it’s fair to say this should be a hilarious return to form for this ‘SNL’ alum.
Release Date: August 14 on Apple TV+

Lovecraft Country
What You Need to Know: Based on the novel of the same name by author Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” blends horror and drama to tell the story of Atticus Black, his friend Letitia, and his Uncle George as they embark on a road trip in search of a missing father. Placed in the 1950’s Jim Crow America, the series aims to blend the real-life racist terror with literal monsters. The series is led by some rising stars with Jonathan Majors taking the lead following his impressive turn in this year’s “Da 5 Bloods” and his breakout role in 2019’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” alongside Jurnee Smollett-Bell who returns to television following her blockbuster turn in “Birds of Prey.” Developed by “Underground” executive producer and creator Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, the series looks to be an unsettling adaptation.

Hoops
What You Need To Know: Following the success of Netflix animated series “Big Mouth” and “BoJack Horseman,” new sports-centric animated comedy series “Hoops” premieres on the streamer this month. Starring “New Girl” alum Jake Johnson as an obnoxious, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who thinks he will hit the “big leagues” if he can turn his terrible team around. Also starring long time “Daily Show” correspondent Rob Riggle and created by “New Girl” writer Ben Hoffman, the series is bound to have audiences in stitches. Since Matt Groening’sThe Simpsons” premiered in 1989 (now the longest-running animated comedy in the history of television) and Seth McFarlane’s brainchild “Family Guy” premiered about 10 years later, audiences have been loving animated adult comedies more and more. Johnson serves as executive producer for the series alongside Hoffman in partnership with 20th Century Fox, who were among the first to take a chance on animated adult comedies, having produced both “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons” well before it was trendy.
