Got a Tip?

The Russo Brothers’ ‘21 Bridges’ Starring Chadwick Boseman Delayed Until November

Over the last couple of months, if you’re been to a movie theater, you’ve likely seen the trailer for the upcoming action-thriller “21 Bridges.” The film, which stars Chadwick Boseman as a cop that is tracking down a couple of criminals that murdered police officers, is the first major release from the Russo Brothers’ production company AGBO. However, less than two months before the film’s release, it appears that distributor STX has delayed “21 Bridges.”

According to Deadline, STX and AGBO have decided to move “21 Bridges” from September 27 to November 22. The move comes after the film was featured as part of AGBO’s slate unveiling at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. There, the Russo Brothers released a new trailer for the film, and everything seemed to be on target for that September date.

As for potential reasons for the move, nothing was reported. However, you can assume that STX and AGBO were concerned about the box office prospects of releasing “21 Bridges” in September. On that date, the film would have opened against the animated film “Abominable” and the horror-thriller “The Hunt.” Of course, the biggest film opening in that time period is the following week’s release of “Joker,” which is poised to have a long, profitable run at the box office. So, by moving out of that period, “21 Bridges” avoids those potential issues.

Unfortunately, November isn’t much better.

Opening against “21 Bridges” on November 22 is director Reed Morano’s thriller “Rhythm Section,” Disney’s sure-thing blockbuster “Frozen 2,” and Marielle Heller’s Mister Rogers biopic “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” The week prior, on November 15, films like “Charlie’s Angels” and “Ford v. Ferrari” are debuting. Then, of course, the following week on November 27, you have Rian Johnson’sKnives Out” and the thriller “Queen and Slim.” Needless to say, at first glance, it would appear that “21 Bridges” is jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. Granted, the fact that Thanksgiving and Christmas mean that the box office makes room for multiple major films. But still, it’s going to be busy.

As mentioned, “21 Bridges” is now set to open on November 22.
