With the devastating wildfires ravaging the west coast, movies on the dangerous impacts of climate change feel especially sobering right now. But at the same time, they’re still important. “2067,” written and directed by Seth Larney (“Tombiruo”), offers its own sci-fi twist on the genre.

Inspired by the current state of the environment, the Aussie director tells the story of Earth in the distant future destroyed by climate change. Humanity is forced to survive on artificial oxygen, and barely hanging on at that. That synthetic air is beginning to kill the mass population. All hope is lost until a cryptic message from the future arrives — “Send Ethan Whyte.” Ethan, a lowly underground tunnel worker is suddenly sent to a dangerous and unknown future to fight for humanity’s survival.
The sci-fi thriller offers a dark commentary on climate change and a terrifying take at the future we are headed towards, with a bit of sci-fi flare. “2067” stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (“X-Men: Apocalypse”), Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”), Leeanna Walsman, (“Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”), Deborah Mailman (“Offspring”), and Sana’a Shaik (“Reckoning”).
