On The Golden Globes’ 80th celebration and return to NBC, it was Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin walked away with the top prizes as Best Picture Drama and Musical or Comedy. In the first televised event of the Oscar season, both writer-directors were rewarded additional prizes to go alongside their Best Picture wins, with Spielberg winning Best Director and McDonagh winning Best Screenplay.
In the acting categories, Austin Butler (Elvis) and Cate Blanchett (TÁR) took home the Best Actor and Actress categories for Drama, while Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) were awarded on the Musical or Comedy side of things. Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) were honored with the Best Supporting Actor and Actress trophies, both giving moving speeches at the start of the evening. Other highlights included Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio winning Best Animated Feature, RRR winning Best Original Song, and Argentina, 1985 pulling a surprising upset in Best Non-English Language Film.
On the television side of things, ABC’s Abbott Elementary was the top prize getter, winning three Globes including Best Comedy Series, Best Actress (Quinta Brunson), and Best Supporting Actor (Tyler James Williams). Jeremy Allen White took home the Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on FX’s The Bear. Over on the Drama side, HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon took home Best Drama Series. Other winners included Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner for Best Actor in a Drama series, Euphoria’s Zendaya for Best Actress in a Drama series, and Ozark’s Julia Garner winning Best Supporting Actress for the combined Drama/Comedy category.
In the Limited Series categories, Mike White’s The White Lotus scored the win for Best Limited, Anthology Series win, with the show’s actress Jennifer Coolidge winning Best Supporting Actress in this field of winners. Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story), Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout), and Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird) respectfully won the Best Actor, Actress, and Supporting Actor honors for the Limited Series categories.
