Got a Tip?

‘Inglourious Basterds’ Tops The 2009 Sag Awards

PRE AWARDS:
As usual, the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) are always the most key augur of to the way Oscar eventually turns in the acting categories. No we won’t be live blogging it. But we’re here, so we’ll probably add the winners as they happen.

For the movie categories that is, we’re not going to bother with all the TV awards. Of course there’s only five categories for movies which makes this easy for us. And yes, the acting awards are pretty sewn up this year. We don’t really expect any major surprises. We’ll see. That said, if Carey Mulligan doesn’t win we’ll be pissed.

POST AWARDS
As you can see “Inglourious Basterds” was the big winner taking Best Ensemble Cast (the kind-of Best Picture award) and Best Supporting Award for Christoph Waltz’s performance as Col. Hans Landa. Looks like we were pissed at Mulligan’s loss and it seems the Oscars will be fairly predictable since the Globes and SAGs were pretty much the same.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
WINNER: Christoph Waltz, “Inglourious Basterds”
Matt Damon, “Invictus”
Woody Harrelson, “The Messenger”
Christopher Plummer, “The Last Station”
Stanley Tucci, “The Lovely Bones”

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
WINNER: Mo’Nique, “Precious”
Penelope Cruz, “Nine”
Vera Farmiga, “Up In The Air”
Anna Kendrick, “Up In The Air”
Diane Kruger, “Inglourious Basterds”

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
WINNER: Jeff Bridges, “Crazy Heart”
George Clooney, “Up In The Air”
Colin Firth, “A Single Man”
Morgan Freeman, “Invictus”
Jeremy Renner, “The Hurt Locker”

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
WINNER: Sandra Bullock, “The Blind Side”
Helen Mirren, “The Last Station”
Carey Mulligan, “An Education”
Gabourey Sidibe,“Precious”
Meryl Streep, “Julie & Julia”

OK, the night was fairly predictable, but a lot of us didn’t think Sandra Bullock would take this award again, like she did at the Globes. We guess the thinking now is that this is sort-of a lifetime achievement award, but not quite like Jeff Bridge’s award, he’s obviously been nominated four times before and never won. That’s a Scorsese-like lifetime nod. This one will probably be more of a mid-career, you’ve done solid work throughout, win. Either that or she’s actually outstanding, but dunno if we’ll see “Blindside” soon enough (or ever) to find out.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST IN A MOTION PICTURE
WINNER: “Inglourious Basterds”
“An Education”
“The Hurt Locker
“Nine”
“Precious”

Quentin’s ‘Inglourious’ was always our top choice here, but we were still hoping “The Hurt Locker” would sneak in, and lots of outlets, including Nikki Finke and Anne Thompson, were calling it an upset. What does this mean for Oscar? Mmm, it depends. Yes, in a way it’s SAG’s Best Picture award in lieu of that category, but it doesn’t always sync up with Oscar. This might be more of a way for the Guild to tip their cap to Quentin’s work. We’ll see. A lot of insiders have told us that “Inglourious Basterds” has a lot of support for Best Picture, but to us it’s probably “Avatar” unless “The Hurt Locker” can magically sneak in there. We still have some hope, but the populist voting system this year worries us.

  1. My immediate tweet after coming back to my computer to see Sandra Bullock won involved a black hole and world being sucked in… I think that about sums it up. Why do these awards shows get so psyched up about giving someone credit for a career of entertaining parts in mediocre films because they finally manage to go 1/5000th a step above mediocrity? Beats me.

As for the other wins. I'm good with those 🙂

  2. name is SEAN…

WOWWWW!!!! Completely agree , once again Mulligan has lost again for what I believe the best performance in the CATEGORY!

    DAMNIT!!!

Bullock is definitly Oscar bound, without a doubt in my opinion

The OTHER categories worked out well…I wanted Basterds to win Ensemble & it did!

Can someone answer me why Up in the Air was not nominated for Ensemble???????????????

  3. I'm glad Inglourious Basterds won the "Cast Performance" award… it really shows that the movie was amazingly solid and the entire thing was great, not just a couple actors, although I'm glad Christoph Waltz won for his role as SS Hanz Landa, because we was sublime.

  4. The movie wasn't my cup of tea, but it's not like Bullock was awful in The Blind Side. I think it's funny how she keeps winning these awards and pissing off people who take these awards too seriously. Sure, Carey Mulligan deserves the awards (and will win one someday,) but to me it's more fun to watch people declare the end of times just because Sandra Bullock gets awards. It makes the award season more entertaining to me. What would make this even funnier is if Mulligan and Sidibe teamed up and beat Sandra up in the alley after she wins the Oscar. They're just statues and its not like people who lose awards have their careers taken away.

  5. Hmm, i can't believe you guys at theplayist haven't even watched The Blind Side and yet still can write Bullock off just like that simply because her previous performances have been nothing that spectacular or because they're commercially focused. I'm quite disappointed actually to know that. I sincerely thought you guys were objective and were good objective film critics.

I think Mulligan delivered the best performance out of the bunch. However, I was even more moved and taken away by Bullock's turn in The Blind Side. But I'm not a film critic or anything but it is definitely not as if Bullock did not deserve the award at all or that she's a bad actress. That woman has charm like no other actress in the business and I believe, she somehow managed to use that in a way to captivate the audience and deliver a stunning performance.

Yeah, that's what I think but I hope you guys at theplaylist can at least see a film before putting it away just because of an actress or other superficial factors. I'm still gonna be a loyal reader though. 🙂

  6. @anonymous:Sandra Bullock may be a nice woman but she's also an inoffensive actress.

But if she can win,Jennifer Lopez or Hugh Grant could be the next and Valentine's day could be nominated next year.
It's a great hope for every lazy actors.

i only saw "bright star" and "Julia&Julie"(the other movies again aren't out in France) but i was for Abbie Cornish!

As for lead actors,i was for Rockwell("Moon")or Mortensen("the road")or Jenner.

  7. @RER. It's not like anyone said the sky is falling. Or at least we didn't, but Mulligan just deserves that award so damn much. Then again, so does Abbie Cornish and as someone already pointed out, she was nowhere to be found in awards season, sadly.

  8. gotta agree, the least you guys can do is watch The Blind Side. only seems fair, no?

i saw it, don't think Bullock deserves the awards that she's been getting. but she does deserve to be in the nominated 5.
