“Russian Doll”
As one of the best-reviewed and most talked-about series of 2019, Netflix’s “Russian Doll” returns for its second season. Natasha Lyonne and Charlie Barnett are joined in season two by “Schitt’s Creek’s” Annie Murphy as we pick up four years after the events of season one. While the time loop seemed to end in the season one finale, Nadia and Alex soon find themselves subjected to even worse fates as they delve deep into their pasts through an unexpected time portal. New episodes will see Lyonne stepping up to also write and direct along with already producing and starring in the series.
Release Date: Season two premieres April 20 on Netflix.
“The Flight Attendant”
Something of a surprise hit for HBO in 2021, the Kaley Cuoco-led “The Flight Attendant” returns for its second season after what easily could’ve been a series finale. Cuoco stars as Cassie, who, in season one, woke up after a drunken night out to the man she’d been with murdered in her bed, which leads to a hasty cover-up that will lead to the rest of the events of the following episodes. With that story wrapped up, season two follows a now-sober Cassie now living in LA while moonlighting as a CIA asset in her spare time. Once again, though, she becomes entangled in international intrigue after she accidentally bears witness to another murder. Zosia Mamet, Griffin Matthews, Deniz Akdeniz, and Rosie Perez return as regulars.
Release Date: Season two premieres April 21 on HBO Max.
“Barry”
After being long-delayed due to COVID, HBO’s dark comedy “Barry” returns with Bill Hader and co., reportedly already having the fourth and final season written. Hader plays Barry, a hired hitman who dreams of being an actor and who, with each passing episode, digs himself further and further into trouble of his own making. The Emmy-winning series also stars Henry Winkler, Sarah Goldberg, and Stephen Root, and the scene-stealing Anthony Carrigan as Chechen mobster NoHo Hank. Season two upped the ante from its already stellar first and, with the time given to rework the upcoming season, will likely do the same, especially as we watch the fallout unfold following the violent conclusion to season two. “Barry” was created between Hader and Alec Berg.
Release Date: Season three premieres April 24 on HBO.
“Gaslit”
It’s a big month for political thrillers this month, with “Gaslit,” created by Robbie Pickering and directed by Matt Ross, is one of them. Based on the podcast “Slow Burn” by Leon Neyfakh, the series put a modern twist on the 1970s political Watergate scandal by centering on untold stories and characters who have been forgotten to time. They’ve lined up quite the cast, which, led by Julia Roberts, will also star Betty Gilpin, Sean Penn, Dan Stevens, and Shea Whigham.
Release Date: The series premieres on April 24 on Starz.
“The Man Who Fell To Earth”
Adapted from the 1963 novel Walter Tevis and, dauntingly, already adapted to film in 1976 by Nicolas Roeg and starring David Bowie, the latest iteration of “The Man Who Fell to Earth” will see Chiwetel Ejiofor stepping into the lead role. The story centers on Ejiofor, an alien who has arrived on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and who must then learn what it means to become human while simultaneously fighting for the survival of his species. The show, created by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, debuted at this year’s SXSW and also stars Naomie Harris, Jimmi Simpson, Clarke Peters, and Rob Delaney.
Release Date: Season one premieres April 24 on Showtime.
