“The French Dispatch“
In Wes Anderson’s latest film, his first since 2018’s “Isle of Dogs” and first live-action film since 2014’s masterpiece “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” he crafts a love letter to journalists. Set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th-century French city, the film brings to life a collection of stories published in “The French Dispatch.” The film has no shortage of returning faces to the Anderson fold and new ones, with Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet, and Jeffrey Wright just some of the names involved. Our critic called it “…a work of such unparalleled Andersonian wit that at times the sheer level of detail – mobile, static, graphic and typographic – that bedecked the screen was enough to make your correspondent’s jaw slacken.”
Release Date: October 22 in theaters via Focus Features.
“Dune“
Perhaps the most talked-about film of the year, the Timothée Chalamet led adaptation of the science fiction novel “Dune” from Frank Herbert arrives this month from director Denis Villeneuve (“Blade Runner 2049.” The story follows Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the son of a noble family who has been entrusted with the protection of the most valuable asset and most virtual element of the galaxy. Alongside Chalamet stars Zendaya (“Euphoria“), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes From a Marriage“), Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem. A notoriously dense and challenging work to adapt, our critic called the latest iteration “spellbinding,” writing “Aesthetically, “Dune” is pretty damn monumental and enveloping, and for audiences that potentially may find the plot confusing, the film still works on a deeply experiential, visceral level.”
Release Date: October 22 in theaters and HBO Max.
“Last Night in Soho“
This year, Edgar Wright has already had one film premiere with the delightful documentary “The Sparks Brothers.” Still, the upcoming “Last Night in Soho” is stirring up the most anticipation. His first narrative film since “Baby Driver” in 2017, it’s yet another callback to the genres he loves. Starring Thomasin McKenzie (“Leave No Trace“), Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit“), Matt Smith (“Doctor Who“) and the late Diana Rigg (“Game of Thrones“) in her last role, the film follows an aspiring fashion designer who finds herself able to enter the 1960s where she meets a wannabe singer. Our critic who saw the film in Venice wasn’t full enamored with it, but regardless, all of Wright’s inventive, visually dynamic movies are always worth seeing in theaters.
