13 Movies To See In August: ‘Bullet Train,’ ‘Prey,’ ‘Funny Pages’ & More

Emergency Declaration
“Parasite” star Song Kang-ho leads in the drama “Emergency Declaration” from director and writer Han Jae-Rim (“The King”). The film follows an aircraft that is forced to declare an emergency when a terrorist attack takes place, setting the stage for a claustrophobic thriller. The film premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and stars “Squid Game” actor Lee Byung-hun, along with Jeon Do-yeon (“Secret Sunshine”) and Kim Nam-gil
Release Date: August 12 in theaters via Showbox.

Secret Headquarters
The filmmakers behind “Nerve” and “Project Power” return with the Owen Wilson project “Secret Headquarters.” Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the film follows a kid who discovers a secret headquarters of a superhero underneath his home that he must defend with his friends after a villain’s attack. Walker ScobellJesse Williams, and Michael Peña also star. 
Release Date: August 12 to stream on Paramount+.

“Summering” 
Sorry For Your Loss” and “The End of the Tour” director James Ponsoldt returns with his first film since the 2017 feature “The Circle” with Emma Watson. Written by Ponsoldt with Benjamin Percy, the story follows four best friends as they’re about to start middle school, a move that comes with the knowledge that their lives are about to change forever. Our critic, who saw the film at the Sundance Festival earlier this year, praised the performances, writing, “The young actors – Lia BarnettMadalen MillsEden Grace Redfield, and Sanai Victoria – are all charismatic and engaging, particularly in the scenes they share with the actors who play their mothers.”
Release Date: August 12 in theaters via Bleecker Street.

Beast
Director Baltasar Kormákur (“2 Guns,” “Adrift”) is once again in survival movie mode. Idris Elba plays a widowed father who, along with his two teenage daughters, finds themselves hunted by a rogue lion. Iyana HalleyLeah SavaSharlto Copley, and Riley Keough also star with a script from Ryan Engle and based on a story by Jaime Primak Sullivan
Release Date: August 19 in theaters via Universal Pictures.
