“Master Gardener”
Following his 2021 film “The Card Counter” with Oscar Isaac, Paul Schrader returns with his latest, “Master Gardener.” Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Quintessa Swindell, and Esai Morales star in the film, which follows the horticulturist of a beautiful estate as his dark past begins to reveal itself. Our critic said this is the director at his “tenderest,” writing, “Pain overflows but does not suffocate, bright flowers blossoming out of tarmac, the barren made bountiful.”
Release Date: May 19 in theaters via Magnolia Pictures.
“The Cow Who Sang A Song Into Rhe Future”
With easily the best title of any film being released this month, “The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future” is the debut film from Francisca Alegria. Mía Maestro, Alfredo Castro, and Leonor Varela star in the film that follows a long-dead woman who has come back to life in a river of dead fish which transforms the lives of her family.
Release Date: May 19 in theaters via Kino Lorber.
“The Little Mermaid”
Disney continues to remake its existing animated films with the live-action adaptation, “The Little Mermaid.” Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Chicago,”) directs the film which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel. Melissa McCarthy, Jonah Hauer-King, Simone Ashley, Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, and more star as the film’s iconic characters. Alan Menken returns as composer with Lin-Manuel Miranda joining to write new original songs for the latest adaptation.
Release Date: May 26 in theaters via Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
“You Hurt My Feelings”
Director and writer Nicole Holofcener reunites with Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the hilarious and heartfelt “You Hurt My Feelings.” Dreyfus plays Beth, an author who learns that her husband, Don (Tobias Menzies) hasn’t been giving her his honest opinions about her latest book. Owen Teague, Michaela Watkins, and Arian Moayed also star. Our critic wrote that “…this feels like one of Holofcener’s most personal films, dealing as it does in so much material specifically related to being a writer and creative person.”
