“Doctor Who”
Synopsis: The further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as The Doctor, a Time Lord/Lady who can change appearance and gender by regenerating when near death, and her human companions.
What You Need to Know: With season eleven of the new “Doctor Who,” the series is finally breaking its pattern of regenerating the titular character into another straight white actor by casting its first female Doctor with Jodie Whittaker, who stunned on “Broadchurch.” Whittaker, by the trailers alone, is having a blast, bringing the right sense of playful adventure to a character who needs to be warm but also decidedly alien. And the thrill of seeing a female face on such a familiar character is undeniable. The other change in show-runner with Chris Chibnall taking over for Steven Moffat is also welcome, with the latter’s writing and creative choices growing tedious the longer he stuck to it.
Release Date: October 7th on BBC
“The Conners”
Synopsis: After a sudden turn of events, the Conner family is forced to face the daily struggles of life in a way they never have before. This iconic family, Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky, and D.J., demonstrates that laughter, conversation and love can overcome anything.
What You Need To Know: Following Roseanne Barr’s unceremonious exit from the series that bore her name, “The Conners” will re-emerge without their family’s matriarch. It will be intriguing for audiences eager to see how the series will carry on without Barr. She recently went on a profanity-laced tirade on Twitter claiming she was angry that the writers decided to write her off the show by saying that she died because of opioid overdose. All the controversy surrounding the show is no doubt working to help lure audiences to tune in especially since John Goodman himself confirmed his wife’s death. The show maintains the whole cast from the original “Roseanne” reboot including Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Emma Kenney from “Shameless.”
Release Date: October 16th on ABC
“Riverdale”
Synopsis: A subversive take on Archie and his friends, exploring small-town life, the darkness, and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.
What You Need to Know: While season two of The CW’s “Riverdale” squandered much of its pulpy good will it had built in it’s much more fun season one, we still can’t help but be morbidly curious to see what season three might bring after the major shakeups at the end of last year. Possibly the most dramatic series on air – for good and bad – each time you think that the show won’t be able to outdo itself, it manages to take its built-in absurdity of being a serious show based off of the “Archie” comics and elevate it even further.
